I remember when I was 12, a devastating storm hit the neighborhood that I lived in! The neighborhood took a direct hit and a lot of people were out of power for a while, but after a startling evening in the dark, wondering how long the storm would last, the sun finally came out and my good friend and I were all shocked at the outcome of the powerful storm.
This was the middle of the summer time in a southern region, so you can imagine the heat that my good friend and I had to endure during this time; My friend and I cooked on the grill and used water from the pool to flush the toilets.
My friend and I were not used to this kind of living. Most of my friends had power after a few days however for some reason, my family’s cabin did not get power back for 4 weeks. My friend and I finally broke down and had my aunt bring us a generator so that my good friend and I could run electrically to a portable air conditioner. My entire family slept in one room for two weeks until the power was back on, but i remember going to my friends cabin and thinking how my good friend and I had taken electricity for granted my whole life! When the power finally came back on, my good friend and I were thrilled to learn that the A/C was still working in all of our rooms. A week without A/C in the heat can really build some character, or at least that is what my Mom told us. My friend and I are forever grateful for the days my good friend and I get to spend in the A/C during the summer time months.
